At 1,650 meters high, Ifrane, close to Fez and Meknès, is also known as  “Little Switzerland” for the beauty of its mountains, its temperate weather, European architecture and its large National Park, renowned for its beautiful Moroccan cedars. The first traces of human habitation date back to the Neolithic era as evidenced by the existence of caves similar to ones located in Tizguite and numerous other caves as far as El Hajeb.  Ifrane was originally ‘Tourtite’ or ‘Ourti’, which is Berber for ‘garden’, and then Ifrane, which means ‘caves’.

If you visit Ifrane during the winter, you can ski in the nearby winter resort of Michlifen. In the summertime, enjoy its moderate climate and lovely green landscapes. Rains occur mainly in the winter, and summer is continually moderate and pleasant. Hike in the famous Moroccan cedar forest of the huge Ifrane National Park, known for its rich beauty and many lakes. Enjoy fishing in the lakes and streams for trout or pike or hunt wild boars, young partridges, or hares.

Ifrance, a European influenced mountain resort is similar to large European resorts such as Saint Moritz or Megève. The majority of of its villas are inspired f by French architecture and the French who lived there, nostalgic for their homeland, added many elements of their native culture to the area.

Ifrane is the ideal place of origin for a variety of visits to other areas.  From the resort, you may tour beautiful dayets (lakes), visit the Cascades of the Virgin by traveling in the direction of the ‘source Vittel’, or visit Azrou, a town of the Middle Atlas, 17 km from Ifrane, famous for its craft center specializing in cedar woodwork. You will find all the information for your tours, including detailed maps of the mountains and the lake, at your hotel, your riad, or your rented villa in Ifrane.
